"The Rise of the Missionary Spirit in America, 1790-1815" provides a detailed exploration of the foundational years of the American missionary movement. The work examines the profound shifts in religious thought and practice that occurred between the end of the 18th century and the early 19th century, a period marked by intense spiritual fervor and organizational innovation. Oliver Wendell Elsbree analyzes how various Protestant denominations transitioned from localized efforts to structured, nationwide endeavors aimed at both domestic frontiers and foreign lands.
The book highlights the influence of the Second Great Awakening and the socio-political climate of the early Republic in shaping a new collective identity centered on evangelism. It explores the formation of influential missionary societies and the theological motivations that drove believers to support global outreach. By documenting the rhetorical and institutional developments of the era, the text provides a comprehensive look at how the missionary spirit became integral to the American religious landscape. "The Rise of the Missionary Spirit in America, 1790-1815" is a vital study for historians of religion and students of American cultural development, offering insight into the origins of a movement that would have a lasting global impact.
