What really happens when we die--and how can we know? In Anticipating the Afterlife, biblical teacher Paul Luckraft offers a clear, compassionate, and comprehensive guide to one of humanity's deepest questions. Moving beyond assumptions, folklore, and inherited tradition, he invites readers into a grounded, hope-filled exploration of what Scripture actually reveals about death, the intermediate state, resurrection, judgment, and the world to come. With clarity and pastoral sensitivity, Luckraft begins by examining our modern attitudes to death--our fears, confusions, and quiet longings. He explores the nature of human life, the relationship between body and soul/spirit, and the reason death entered the world at all. From there, he opens the Bible's teaching on what happens immediately after we die, challenging common misconceptions shaped by Greek philosophy, popular culture, and later church traditions such as purgatory, soul-sleep, and post-mortem salvation. Drawing deeply from both Testaments, Anticipating the Afterlife examines Sheol, Hades, the question of communicating with the dead, and difficult pastoral issues such as the destiny of infants and whether animals have a place in God's future creation. Luckraft then turns to the heartbeat of Christian hope: the resurrection of Jesus, the promise of our own resurrected bodies, and the timing and nature of coming judgment. He contrasts biblical teaching on hell and modern alternatives, and lifts our eyes to the new heaven and new earth--our true eternal home. Accessible yet thoroughly researched, this book offers assurance for believers, clarity for seekers, and thoughtful guidance for anyone wrestling with the mystery of what lies beyond the grave. Anticipating the Afterlife ultimately points us not to speculation, but to the God who is just, loving, and faithful--and who holds our future securely in His hands.
