What role does Bavarian play in Bavarian radio? Must, may or can Bavarian Radio programmes use dialect? When listening, it is noticeable that dialect is certainly represented in various programme slots. Whether it's the Bavarian language course "Bairisch f Fortgefahrene" (Bavarian for advanced learners), the "Betthupferl" (bedtime story) in dialect, Bavarian-speaking presenters or regional musicians who can be heard in programmes such as "Volksmusik aus Bayern" (Folk music from Bavaria) or "Die bayerische Band der Woche" (The Bavarian band of the week), dialect is frequently encountered. But are only individual programme elements, contributions or programmes classified as dialect, or are dialects experiencing a social upswing in the media and society? This thesis aims to explore these questions. The central research question is therefore: What role does dialect play in the understanding of those responsible for programming and content in the radio programmes of Bayerischer Rundfunk?
