This paper attempts, on the basis of an article in the journal *Bl酹ter f literarische Unterhaltung* from 1836, to analyse the characteristics of the reception of Balzac's work, specifically at the moment when Balzac, with his novel *Le P鋨e Goriot*, and in which he first employed the structural devices that characterise the 'Com嶮ie humaine'. Detailed reviews of Balzac's works were extremely rare in the German press of the time, making this programmatic article, which deals with the two key works - 'Le P鋨e Goriot' and 'Eug幯ie Grandet' - all the more significant.
