Aiko Tanaka returns to her late grandmother's isolated house in Black Tide Village, a remote coastal settlement in southern Kyushu where the Pacific Ocean whispers secrets no one dares to answer.
Grieving the stillbirth of her daughter Haru three years earlier, Aiko seeks only solitude. But on stormy nights, a lone figure appears on the black sand beach a woman in a soaked white yukata, long black hair dripping endlessly, cradling a heavy bundle in her arms.
She speaks with heartbreaking politeness: "My arms are so tired... Could you hold my child? Just for a moment while I rest?"
