The walk was good for both of us. It gave me time to clear my head and settle into my decision to leave. I was feeling a little lost. That job had been my life for so long that I wasn't sure what I was going to do. I tried to calm my mind and enjoy the crisp air and beautiful scenery I took for granted all too often.
When our little cabin came into view, it was a relief to be home. I dropped my bag just inside the door and went to fall onto the couch. Cash jumped up on the end and sat staring at me.
"It's not even close to dinnertime, bud. I know we're home early, but our schedule is going to be changing a bit." He just stared at me. "If you have something to say, just say it. I'm sorry I put you on the spot with Brian, but seeing him jump like that was funny as hell."
Cash tilted his head. "I didn't find it near so amusing."
I'm pretty sure my jaw hit my lap. "Did you just talk?!"
Cash sat a little straighter. "You said if I have something to say, then say it."
I was in shock, no, awe, maybe both. I saw his mouth move and heard words, but dogs don't talk. Until now, apparently.
I sat up and faced Cash. "Exactly how long have you been able to talk?"
"I've always been able to talk. I didn't want to scare you, and I needed to blend in on this world."
"What do you mean this world? You've been with me the whole time."
"Yes, but we aren't from here."
"We? Who's we?"
"You and me. We. We are from another place entirely. Look, this is a bit of a long story to explain. Please allow me to start from the beginning."
I shifted slightly to get comfortable and nodded, ready to listen.
