The Senate and the League of Nations

"The Senate and the League of Nations" provides a definitive insider account of one of the most significant debates in American diplomatic history. Written by Henry Cabot Lodge, a primary figure in the opposition to President Woodrow Wilson's post-war vision, the work meticulously details the legislative struggle over the Treaty of Versailles and the proposed international organization. Lodge explores the complex interplay between national sovereignty, constitutional duty, and the burgeoning calls for global cooperation in the wake of the Great War.

The book serves as a vital historical record, examining the specific reservations proposed by senators and the ideological rift that defined American foreign policy for decades. It offers deep insights into the political climate of the early 1920s, the procedural maneuvers within the United States Senate, and the personal convictions of the men tasked with shaping the post-war world. For students of political science and history, this work remains an essential primary source for understanding the origins of American isolationism and the legalistic challenges of global governance. Lodge's narrative is both a defense of his political actions and a profound reflection on the tensions between national interest and international commitment.
