Foundational Math for Adult Learners: Four Operations, Number Sense, and Number System

This foundational math textbook is designed to help learners prepare for the CASAS, TABE, HiSET, CTE, and GED exams. The book uses Singapore math reasoning methods and aligns with specific CCR standards to help adult education programs and their learners understand core math concepts that meet the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) expectations.

For easy learning and teaching, the book is divided into six (6) main chapters that cover the following topics:

• Number and Operations: Base Ten
• Fractions
• Rational Numbers
• Number and Quantity: The Real Number System

The chapters include mathematical thinking, reasoning, key concepts, and terminology. Each chapter is divided into several sections.

1. Each section includes a list of key math terminology and concepts that students should understand to succeed on their exams.
2. Each section provides step-by-step instructions that learners can easily follow, along with a practice exercise of ten questions.
3. The practice exercises include 2-step and 3-step problems that require mathematical thinking and reasoning. They take various formats, such as multiple-choice, fill-in-the-blank, matching, ordering, and drawing or plotting. Answer keys are given at the end of each section.

At the end of each chapter, learners are given 10 complex or multi-step word problems that summarize the sections' content. The problems require students to understand all the content and concepts to solve them.

This student textbook enables math instructors to guide learners with concise explanations, step-by-step instructions, and sufficient practice to close skills gaps. For example, the tasks presented in this book aim to:

• Make learners think more deeply about specific math concepts and improve their mathematical thinking and reasoning skills.
• Help learners connect their math learning with the real world.
• Create opportunities for learners to read, write, and discuss math concepts.
