"The Coming of Amos" is a charming and witty exploration of social manners and the collision of two vastly different worlds. When Amos Burden, a naive and unrefined young man from the Australian outback, arrives on the sun-drenched shores of the French Riviera, he brings with him a raw honesty that disrupts the polished lives of the European aristocracy. Entrusted to the care of his uncle, the sophisticated and somewhat jaded painter David Fontenay, Amos must navigate a world of elegance, intrigue, and complex social etiquette.
As Amos undergoes a transformation from an unpolished stranger to a man of substance, William J. Locke delivers a masterclass in social satire and romantic comedy. The narrative follows Amos's earnest attempts to adapt to high society while falling deeply in love with a Russian princess. Filled with Locke's trademark optimism and sophisticated prose, "The Coming of Amos" captures the spirit of the early twentieth century through its vibrant setting and memorable characters. It remains a delightful study of character growth and the enduring power of sincerity in an often artificial world.
