Furniture with a documented history of New York ownership or usage is uncommon. Even rarer are pieces still bearing a New York cabinetmaker's label or owner's mark. Since 1968, the New York State Museum has sought and acquired such furniture. In October 1980, the museum featured some of this furniture for the first time in the major exhibit "New York Labelled and Documented Furniture." The exhibit was scheduled to run through January 4, 1981, but it was extended to March 26, 1981, by popular demand. Of the 130 pieces in that exhibition, 65 bear cabinetmaker's labels.
New York Furniture at the New York State Museum, an illustrated catalog, was published in 1984. An updated catalog became necessary since many other labeled and documented pieces have been added to the museum's collection. Representing both formal and country styles and drawn from almost every area of New York State, this important collection provides a clearer picture of what comprises New York furniture and emphasizes the characteristics that made New York the nation's leader in quality furniture designs throughout the nineteenth century.
