Jeffrey Gibson's POWER FULL BECAUSE WE'RE DIFFERENT was commissioned by MASS MoCA from November 2024-August 2026). The immersive installation takes root in two historic moments: a 1988 Leigh Bowery performance and a 1990 reintroduction of the term Two-Spirit. Gibson's exhibition transforms these moments, through a kaleidoscopic installation featuring video, glass dance stages, garments, mirrored walls, and a resource room. Just as important as the installation itself, Gibson's project is about community For years, Gibson has led the fight for visibility, yet more recently (following his historic role as the first Indigenous artist to represent the United States in a solo exhibition at the Venice Biennale) he looks both to his ancestors and historic artists as much as the next generation. POWER FULL BECAUSE WE'RE DIFFERENT is an unapologetic shout that is needed in this exact moment - the all caps, and the deliberate use of "POWER FULL" instead of "POWERFUL" - creates a community full with power, and one that touts difference as a point of shimmering celebration.
