The [Broken] Heart of Ellis Island: The Forgotten Hospitals

Imagine walking the decaying hallways of a hospital that shaped a nation. Barren, nearly forgotten corridors that once treated hundreds of thousands. Over a span of 50 years, millions from all over the world arrive. They flee famine, war, and persecution. It is the turn of the 20th century, and they land in New York in search of opportunity. Exhausted, these millions arrive with fear and hope in their hearts. They have already experienced a long, arduous journey. They have left their homes. Some have left their families. They are surrounded by strangers, crowded on ships, and forced into lines. When they arrive, they are asked to endure one last ordeal: the medical inspection.
Medical inspectors looking for any deficiencies--physical or mental--decide your fate. Certain conditions could exclude you from entering the country. Certain conditions could get you sent to the hospital.
Operational from 1902-1951, the United States Public Health Service Marine Hospital Number 43 treated nearly a half of million people in its time. Immigrants, military, and citizens were all treated by incredibly dedicated and exhausted medical staff.
