Jonathan's Tales Volume 4

Welcome to the fourth delightful volume of Jonathan's Tales, containing ten magical fairy stories. As with the previous three volumes, Volume 4 presents a wide range of subject matter and places its characters in various difficulties they must overcome-either by their own resourcefulness or with the help of others.

Many of the stories were originally told at bedtime to my then six-year-old son, recorded on my phone, and later carefully transcribed into the written form you hold now. Told over the course of three years, the complete cycle eventually grew to more than one hundred tales. Volume 4 shares the same three aims as Volumes 1-3: first, to entertain; second, to convey knowledge; and third, to offer moral instruction.

To encourage further curiosity, the tales are "peppered" with informative endnotes. These notes both explain factual references and clarify the many idioms and phrases used throughout the narratives. They can also be a useful learning aid for non native English speakers seeking to improve their language skills.

All four volumes are primarily suited to middle-grade readers, yet Volume 4 appeals to a broader audience. Children from eight upwards, teenagers, and adults alike have expressed delight with the previous volumes. There is a simple reason for this cross-generational appeal: life can be understood through rich metaphors that reflect the universal human condition, making these stories accessible and meaningful at all ages.

Jonathan's Tales, Volume 4 brings together ten charming bedtime stories-whimsical, moving, and perfect for children aged eight and up, as well as teens and adults who love a good tale. The Turtle and the Phone renders Sally, a young turtle, in heaps of trouble. Her grandfather Barnabus Backshell seeks King Neptune's help to save her. The Cup and the Swiftness Potion describes a kind, small-statured fisherman and his dreams of winning a marathon; a rescued Irish sea pixie helps make that dream possible. The Cup and the Trousers is a tongue-in-cheek tale of Henry, who defies his father and becomes the butt of a long-standing family joke, until lessons are learned. In The Robin and the Black Mole, with help from squirrel, badger, owl, rabbit and mole, a struggling robin finds his family's happiness restored. The Pear and the Shirt witness Tobias accidentally breaking an ancient magical garden spell. Francesca Sweetsipper and Mr Pocketmeister step in to set things right. The Ox and the Bull traces Binsey bull's misadventures that send him 100,000 years into the past; can he find his way back to Bull Land and his family?
