Radio frequency identification (RFID) has been used for decades to tag and track objects in both industrial and non-industrial settings. However, the use of this technology has now expanded to offer a wider range of solutions. The idea behind this book stems from the desire to recount everything that has been achieved so far with RFID technology, and to explore the future possibilities of using this technology for applications beyond identification.
Starting from the basic concepts and measurements of the main parameters, researchers and practitioners can find a clear and effective approach to this standardized technology for implementing UHF-RFID localization solutions with and sensing systems for various physical quantities. Looking to the future, two fundamental evolutionary paths for classical systems are presented: chip-less systems and non-linear systems. Finally, the most innovative applications of the moment are presented, to stimulate interest in understanding what else can be done with RFID and thus identify future revolutionary or "killer" applications. In the context of RFID, the first killer application, which led to mass adoption, was item-level retail traceability. Item-level-tagging is described as a fundamental breakthrough in the large-scale adoption of RFID technology. The challenge of the future is to seek out and discover new killer applications.
Advances and Future Capabilities in RFID Technology is aimed at advanced students and researchers in signal processing, microwaves and electromagnetics working on RFID applications.
