商品簡介

There is a room in the Vatican where nothing is thrown away. Not a receipt, not a resignation letter, not a note passed between two frightened young men in 1523 arguing about heresy. The Apostolic Archive holds four hundred years of paper, and paper, unlike people, does not know how to forget.

This is a story about what happens when paper remembers something a man has spent thirty-eight years trying not to.

It begins, as these things often do, with a death. Not a murder, not yet, but the ordinary death of an old man who happened to wear white. Popes die the way anyone dies, in a bed, with monitors beeping and a private secretary weeping quietly by the door, and the world outside does not yet know that the machinery of an ancient church has already begun to turn, the way a body keeps a certain warmth for a while after the heart has stopped.

What follows concerns a cardinal who might become pope, a woman in Dublin who has just been told that her mother was not her mother, an archivist who finds a file she was never meant to open, and an investigator who does not believe in accidents inside buildings that are seven hundred years old and watched, always, by someone.

It is a story about celibacy and its cost, about the seal of confession and what it protects, about how an institution built to forgive sin can be so unable to survive the appearance of it. It is about a woman named Keeley Hart, who did not ask to be anyone's secret, and a man named Thomas Ashworth, who built a life on the hope that secrets, like sins, could be absolved simply by never being named.

Rome does not forgive quickly. But it remembers everything, and sometimes that is a kind of mercy.

There is a temptation, telling a story like this one, to make its villain a single man, a single office, a single failure of character large enough to explain everything that follows from it. The temptation should be resisted. What happened inside these walls happened because dozens of ordinary decisions, made by reasonably decent people trying, in their own limited ways, to do right by an institution they loved, accumulated over decades into something none of them would have chosen if they had seen the whole shape of it at once. That is how most real harm is done, in the Church as everywhere else. Not by monsters, but by careful men who mistake the protection of an institution's reputation for the protection of the people inside it, and only discover the difference once it is too late to undo the cost.

This account draws freely on invention, though the shape of its questions, about celibacy and confession and the peculiar mathematics of an institution that forgives sin sacramentally while sometimes struggling to survive its public discovery, is entirely real, and has shaped the Church's history for longer than most of its members realize. Read it, if you will, as one answer to a question that has no single answer: what does a man owe the truth, once he has spent a lifetime learning to manage it instead of telling it.
