商品簡介

A landmark memoir of courage, excellence, and the enduring power of the American Dream.

In 1918, a Black man with a third-grade education fled the crushing oppression of Little Rock, Arkansas and took a train north to Detroit, Michigan-drawn by Henry Ford's revolutionary $5-a-day wages. Odis Hall worked with red-hot, molten steel in Ford Motor Company's dangerous foundry to feed his family. His devoted wife Ethel, who had a Domestic Arts certificate from Atlanta's Clark University, was a graceful, devoted homemaker. Together they raised seven children in a two-bedroom flat at 6332 Begole Street on Detroit's West Side. This vibrant neighborhood produced judges, physicians, entrepreneurs, executives, and lawmakers. Among them: Elliott Sawyer Hall, a celebrated civil rights attorney who in 1987 made history as the first Black Vice President of Ford Motor Company.

Born on May 1, 1938, Hall became a proud graduate of Chadsey High School, where he was voted Most Likely to Succeed. An alumnus of Wayne State University with his Bachelor of Arts and Juris Doctor degrees, Hall built a legal career of extraordinary distinction. He served as Chief Assistant Prosecutor for Wayne County, Law Director for the City of Detroit, President of the Detroit Bar Association and the Wolverine Bar Association, and was a founding force behind Neighborhood Legal Services of Michigan. As a partner at Hall, Stone, Allen & Archer alongside future Detroit Mayor and Michigan Supreme Court Justice Dennis Archer, he helped define a generation of Black legal excellence.

During the volatile late 1960s, he stepped into a police standoff with Black Panther Party revolutionaries that threatened to end in bloodshed. Hall negotiated a resolution that saved lives, made national headlines, and cemented his reputation as a man of uncommon courage and moral authority. He became president of the NAACP's Detroit chapter and aspired to become mayor of Detroit.

Instead, Hall experienced a "lightning bolt" moment after winning a $100 verdict when defending Ford Motor Company in a lawsuit. Out of the blue, Ford's leadership asked Hall to become its Vice President of Washington Affairs. For eleven years, Hall represented the company before Congress and federal regulatory agencies while embedding Ford in the civic, cultural, and educational life of the nation's capital. He co-founded the Committee on Public Education, served as Trustee of D.C. Public Schools, and chaired the boards of Howard University Hospital and the Washington Performing Arts Society. As Chairman of the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies and Treasurer of the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, he shaped national conversations on race, policy, and economic equity.

Then as Ford's Vice President of Dealer Development, Hall led the expansion of the company's Minority and Women Dealer Network-opening doors of economic opportunity across the automotive industry that remain open today. He retired from Ford in 2002, returned to law at Dykema Gossett, and now in his late eighties continues as a sole practitioner-still sharp, engaged, and serving Detroit.

From Begole Street to Ford's C-Suite is the quintessential American success story that will leave readers awed and inspired by the power of family, faith, integrity, education, and hard work that can elevate a man with humble beginnings to powerful influence in his city and the world.

For readers of Isabel Wilkerson's The Warmth of Other Suns, David Maraniss's Once in a Great City, and memoirs of trailblazing Black leaders, Elliott Hall's story is essential, inspiring, and long overdue.
