Separation: Anxiety and Anger is the second volume in John Bowlby's trilogy, which began with Attachment. In this book, Bowlby focuses on the emotional consequences of early separation from the maternal figure.
John Bowlby demonstrated that the loss of the maternal figure can give rise to patterns of behaviour of great relevance to psychopathology, and showed that the responses observed in children can also be found in adults who experienced deprivation during childhood.
Separation: Anxiety and Anger clearly illustrates how children react when they are removed from their homes and placed in the care of unfamiliar people.
This insight reflects John Bowlby's enduring legacy, evident in personality disorders and psychoneuroses that reveal the lasting effects of inadequate maternal care or disruptions in the mother child bond.
