商品簡介

The Battle of Coronea marked the moment Sparta preserved its supremacy against the greatest challenge of the Corinthian War.

In 394 B.C., only weeks after the Battle of Nemea, King Agesilaus II returned from his victorious campaign in Asia Minor to confront the growing anti-Spartan coalition in Boeotia. Determined to prevent his enemies from uniting their full strength, he marched south through Central Greece and forced one of the fiercest hoplite battles of the Classical age on the plain near Coronea.

This book examines the Battle of Coronea not simply as another Spartan victory, but as the decisive campaign that secured Spartan dominance during the most dangerous phase of the Corinthian War. It explores how leadership, operational mobility, battlefield discipline, and tactical flexibility enabled Agesilaus to overcome a numerically superior coalition despite facing one of the most determined Theban assaults ever encountered by a Spartan army.

The campaign unfolded as Greece stood on the brink of a major shift in the balance of power. Athens, Thebes, Corinth, Argos, Euboea, and their allies sought to halt Agesilaus before he could reunite with Sparta, hoping to destroy the army that had returned undefeated from Asia Minor. Instead, both armies met in Boeotia in a brutal contest that would decide whether Spartan supremacy would endure.

The battle developed into two simultaneous victories on opposite wings. While the Spartan right shattered the Argive contingent, the Thebans broke through the Spartan left after overwhelming the Orchomenians. Rather than accepting an incomplete success, Agesilaus executed a rapid battlefield redeployment, intercepted the advancing Thebans, and fought one of the bloodiest close-quarter engagements of the Corinthian War. Although many Thebans ultimately forced their way through the Spartan line, the coalition abandoned the field, leaving Agesilaus master of the battlefield and preserving Spartan strategic dominance.

Drawing primarily upon Xenophon's Hellenica, supported by Diodorus Siculus, Plutarch, and modern military scholarship, this study reconstructs the campaign through detailed analysis of the battlefield, troop deployments, and every major phase of the engagement. The volume includes:

- The strategic background of the Corinthian War

- Agesilaus II's return from Asia Minor

- The formation and objectives of the anti-Spartan coalition

- Operational movements leading to Coronea

- Initial deployments and battlefield reconstruction

- Tactical maps, battlefield diagrams, and terrain analysis

- A chronological timeline of the campaign

- Analysis of Spartan leadership and coalition command

- Operational and strategic lessons for modern military thought

Written for readers of military history, strategy, and Classical warfare, this volume explains how battlefield leadership, discipline, and operational initiative enabled Sparta to survive one of the greatest threats to its supremacy during the fourth century B.C.

The Battle of Coronea was more than a Spartan victory.

It preserved Spartan dominance at the most dangerous moment of the Corinthian War, demonstrated the extraordinary battlefield leadership of Agesilaus II, and proved that discipline, cohesion, and decisive command could overcome even the strongest coalition assembled against Sparta.
