商品簡介

PrefaceWhat usually comes to mind when we hear the word "history"? Towering pyramids. The palaces of emperors. Great forts carved in stone. Monuments that still stand after a thousand years.

But not every civilization speaks through stone. Some leave behind something even more lasting - knowledge.

The civilization of the ancient Tamil land belongs to that kind.

For centuries, the finest achievements of Tamil were preserved not in tall towers but in language, in literature, in memory, in cultural continuity. The Sangam poems recorded land, people, emotion, and ethics with astonishing subtlety. Among them, the Tolkappiyam holds a special place. People usually call it a book of grammar. But in truth it is far more - a complete framework for understanding language, environment, society, and human feeling together.

Yet one puzzle long troubled scholars. The literature spoke of a developed, sophisticated society. But the material evidence for it - proof you could touch in the soil - was comparatively scarce. The poems pointed to a rich world; but where was that world in the earth?

The excavations at Keezhadi turned this story around.

Near Madurai, on the banks of the river Vaigai, a town lay sleeping beneath the soil. Evidence emerged for literacy, ordered settlement, craft, trade, and long-settled life. Keezhadi did not merely add another dot to the map of South Asia; it invites us to think again about what "civilization" itself means.

It is from this invitation that this book was born.

I am a scientist. For more than forty years I have worked in fields such as energy, engineering, and advanced materials. One habit that science taught me guided me here too: do not trust a single piece of evidence; compare many; look for how they connect; and come to conclusions with a critical eye.

The central idea of this book is this: the Tolkappiyam should not be seen as mere grammar. It is an integrated framework of knowledge that connects language, environment, society, culture, and human experience. For example, the famous thinai system does not merely classify lands; it organizes the relationships among environment, economy, society, emotion, and culture. It holds ideas comparable to what we today call "systems thinking." I do not say they "invented" it; but it cannot be denied that a closely related way of thinking was there.

Keezhadi and the Tolkappiyam answer different questions. Archaeology shows the material world; literature shows the world of ideas. Together, they illuminate two sides of one civilization.

Do not take the title of this book - The Civilization Buried Beneath the Tamil Soil - too literally. This civilization was never entirely lost. It lived on in poems, in grammar, in language, in customs, in collective memory. What lay beneath the soil were only added fragments of a larger story - fragments that archaeology has only now begun to bring to light.
