About The Author
Thomas Wentworth Higginson (1823-1911) was an American author, minister, abolitionist, and soldier. Born in Cambridge, he was educated at Harvard University, where he developed strong interests in literature and social reform.
Before the American Civil War, Higginson was an outspoken opponent of slavery and an active supporter of abolitionist causes. During the war, he became colonel of one of the first federally authorized Black regiments, gaining firsthand experience that he later recorded in Army Life in a Black Regiment.
In addition to his military service, Higginson was a prominent writer and intellectual. He contributed essays, histories, and biographies, and is also known for encouraging and editing the poetry of Emily Dickinson, helping bring her work to public attention after her death.
Higginson spent his life advocating for equality, women's rights, and education. He remains an important figure in American history for both his activism and his literary contributions.
