The latest comprehensive research into the purpose and use of Stonehenge unequivocally proves that Stonehenge was planned, utilised and cherished as an exotic temple to the sun viewed as a Sun God. Crucially, two carved stones that functioned as idols in the solar-fertility religion of the age were located in the inner sanctum on the axis to the midsummer sunrise and midwinter sunset, until impacted by falling stones after Stonehenge was deserted. Despite surveys and multitudes of visits and inspections by scholars, antiquarians and attentive sightseers in recent centuries, these shrinal stones were never perceived as idols until identified by the author as such. One is a tall well-sculptured male-fertility image which had stood at least 2.6-m high behind its companion, the female-symbolic Scottish-recumbent-type Altar Stone with its central, quartz-seam vertical groove. Together they constitute a sacramental male-female shrine much as in millions of temples worldwide. At summer-solstice sunrise the distinctive male stone was frontally illuminated, and six months later at winter-solstice sunset sublimely back-lit. As for the Heel Stone it was set on lower ground away from the circles such that during midsummer sunrise its shadow penetrates the outer ring of stones and connects with the Altar Stone-as it still does. Similar stone-to-stone solstice unions at other stone circles in Britain and at dozens across Cork and Kerry in Ireland have been identified by the author. Insights have also come from reappraising the plausible evidence from classical literature that Pytheas the Greek visited Stonehenge about 325 BC while it was in use. Lastly, the notion of a positional sweet spot is introduced for which an optimal location is suggested.
