商品簡介

Civilization and Its Discontents is a seminal work by Sigmund Freud, written in 1930, in which he explores the tension between individual desires and the demands of society. Freud begins by examining the ways in which civilization, through social and moral structures, suppresses innate human instincts. He argues that the development of civilization requires individuals to give up their natural freedom and instincts, particularly those related to aggression and sexuality, in favor of collective rules, laws, and norms. This repression, while necessary for societal order, creates a sense of unease and dissatisfaction within individuals, as they struggle to reconcile their desires with the constraints imposed upon them.

Freud further discusses how this conflict between individual instincts and societal expectations leads to internal conflict, which he believes is at the core of human suffering. He suggests that civilization's imposition of guilt and shame, particularly through the internalized figure of the superego, exacerbates the individual's struggle. The superego, which develops from societal values and parental authority, becomes a source of internalized punishment, contributing to feelings of anxiety and frustration. Freud argues that this constant tension between personal desires and the need to conform to societal expectations leads to what he calls the "discontents" of civilization-an inevitable part of human existence within a structured society.

Despite these challenges, Freud acknowledges that civilization has its benefits, including the creation of culture, science, and technological advancements that improve human life. However, he suggests that these advancements come at a psychological cost. The attempt to strike a balance between individual needs and the demands of civilization is ultimately an ongoing struggle, one that Freud views as a fundamental aspect of the human condition. Civilization and Its Discontents remains a critical exploration of the complexities of human nature, offering insight into how societal structures shape both our behaviors and our inner emotional lives.
