When and Where She Enters examines the ground-breaking literary contributions of Luz
Argentina Chiriboga, the first published Afro-Ecuadorian female novelist, whose
fiction offers a powerful lens into the lives of Black women in Ecuador. By
analysing
Tambores bajo mi piel (1991),
Jonat嫳 y Manuela (1992)
and
En la noche de viernes (1997), it explores how Chiriboga's
protagonists navigate issues of race, gender, class and identity while striving
toward self-awareness and empowerment.
The analysis is organized around four
central paradigms in Chiriboga's work: historical consciousness, Afra-feminist
consciousness, self-actualization as empowerment and erotic consciousness,
through which her narratives can be understood as journeys toward critical
defiance and social justice. These frameworks reveal how her fiction reflects
both the personal struggles of individual characters and the collective
experiences of Afra-Ecuadorian women.
This book contributes to Afro-Hispanic
literary criticism by centring a voice often overlooked in Latin American
literature. It situates Chiriboga's work within Ecuadorian history and culture,
while also connecting her vision to the broader experiences of women of the
African diaspora.
