In Finding A Home: Untold Stories of Racialized Immigrant Women, author Sharmila Ranabhat, a Nepalese-Canadian community advocate and social work professional based in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, reflects her personal journey and connects with the lived experiences of racialized immigrant women. The book offers personal stories from 31 women whose roots span 20 different countries, representing South Asian, Southeast Asian, Latin American, Arab, Black, and Caribbean communities. The book features the voices of women from diverse backgrounds, including single mothers, youth, seniors, refugees, newcomers, mothers with disabilities, mothers raising special needs children, and transgender and queer women. The stories in this book highlight both the unique and shared experiences of navigating migration, overcoming systemic barriers, and building a sense of home in a new country.
The stories are analyzed in the "Just Practice Model" which frames social work through the interconnected dimensions of meaning, context, power, history, and possibilities. Each story in this book brings a unique voice of bravery, hardship, hope, resilience, identity, belonging, loss, achievements, and the search for a place to call home. The stories remind us that finding a home is about more than crossing borders. It is about having the strength to build a new life while honoring where we come from.
