Series Three of Three Novellas, One Novel
This novel is told in three parts: three novellas that can be read independently, yet together form a single, continuous story.
Each novella takes Miles and Daki into a different part of the world, where travel becomes something more than a journey from one place to another. What begins as an exploration of landscapes, cultures and communities gradually develops into an investigation into the hidden forces behind the food and commodities that connect distant places.
The three novellas are therefore linked not simply by their characters, but by a common thread: the relationship between people, place, commerce and the natural world.
The first novella introduces the journey and establishes the central investigation. The second carries that investigation into a new environment, revealing that what appeared to be an isolated problem is part of something considerably larger. The third brings the separate strands together, deepening the personal and ecological stakes while moving the story towards its ultimate resolution.
Each novella has its own identity, atmosphere and geographical setting. Each has a beginning, a developing conflict and a conclusion. Yet none exists entirely in isolation. Characters reappear, discoveries are carried forward, questions raised in one part find answers in another, and the consequences of earlier encounters shape what follows.
Read separately, the three novellas are individual journeys.
Read together, they become one novel.
The structure reflects the nature of the story itself: a world in which apparently distant places are connected by invisible networks of trade, exploitation, environmental change and human ambition. Africa leads to Brazil; Brazil leads to Vietnam; Vietnam leads further east and eventually towards Tibet. The geography changes, but the underlying story continues.
This is therefore not three unrelated stories gathered into a single volume. It is one narrative deliberately divided into three movements.
Three journeys.
Three investigations.
Three parts of the same story.
Together, they form Culatra Island.
