商品簡介

is a naturalistic exploration and literary account written during the late 19th century. This work primarily focuses on Muir's deep appreciation for and observations of Cal ifornia's Sierra Nevada, detailing its grandeur and the intricate beauty of its landscapes. The book not only records the physical characteristics of the mountains and their flora and fauna but also expresses a profound rever ence for nature. The opening of "The Mountains of California" captures Muir's awe of the Sierra Nevada, describing its sweeping landscapes, majes tic snow-capped peaks, and diverse ecosystems. He vividly illustrates the re gion's geographical features, contrasting the fertile Central Valley with the rugged mountains that rise nearby. Muir reflects on the dynamic interplay of light, color, and natural elements in the environment, describing his ex periences of joy and reverence while traversing its stunning vistas. He artic ulates a sense of wonder and a call to connect with the sublime beauty of nature, setting the stage for deeper explorations of the Sierra in subsequent chapters.

Yet so simple and mas sive is the topography of the State in general views, that the main central portion displays only one valley, and two chains of mountains which seem almost perfectly regular in trend and height: the Coast Range on the west side, the Sierra Nevada on the east. These two ranges coming together in curves on the north and south inclose a magnificent basin, with a level floor more than 400 miles long, and from 35 to 60 miles wide. This is the grand Central Valley of California, the waters of which have only one outlet to the sea through the Golden Gate. But with this general simplicity of fea tures there is great complexity of hidden detail. The CoastRange, risingasa grand green barrier against the ocean, from 2000 to 8000 feet high, is com posed of innumerable forest-crowned spurs, ridges, and rolling hill-waves which incloseamultitudeofsmallervalleys;somelookingoutthroughlong, forest-lined vistas to the sea; others, with but fewtrees, to theCentralValley; while a thousand others yet smaller are embosomed and concealed in mild, round-browed hills, each, with its own climate, soil, and productions
