Four hundred years ago, the world went dark.
The Custodium of Meridal has spent every year since keeping the fire from coming again, sealing what is dangerous, releasing what is harmless, and teaching two hundred thousand people that the Silence was a catastrophe the Ancestors brought upon themselves.
Serelle Vayn has never had cause to doubt it. A foundling raised by the institution she serves, she is the finest reconstructor in the Hall of Recovered Text, and her whole gift is for absence, for feeling the shape of what a damaged page is no longer saying.
Then a flood sends her down to a gallery nobody has audited in four centuries, and behind a wall that should not be there she finds a ledger kept for nineteen days after the world ended.
By clerks. Who recorded the weather.
Four hundred miles east, a salvager named Kael Draveth cuts into a sealed chamber below guild depth and finds a machine that has been waiting four hundred years for somebody to put a bare hand on it.
It answers him.
Within a month, his buyers are dead, the correcting arm is sweeping the eastern territories, and two people with every reason to betray one another are the only ones alive holding both halves of the same fact.
What they carry is not a catastrophe. It is a decision deliberated, minuted, and carried by eleven votes to two, and the body that made it was never dissolved.
It has been governing quietly ever since.
To find out why, they will have to cross four hundred miles of the worst country in the world, to a door at the edge of everything that has been asking the same question, patiently, since before the walls of Meridal were built.
Somebody is going to have to answer it.
THE ARCHIVE BENEATH is the first book of an epic science fiction series about institutions, memory, and the terrible things careful people do when nobody asks them to stop. For readers of literary and post-apocalyptic science fiction.
