Jesus Christ is the Good Shepherd who fulfills the prophecies of Ezekiel 34 and Psalm 23, "The Lord is my Shepherd." Jesus laid down His life for His sheep, and took up His life again, so that He may guide them to where He is. The "shepherd", however, to whom the title of this book refers is the angel of Hermas' fifth vision, who reveals the commandments and parables that follow.
"The Shepherd" was attributed in ancient times to Hermas, who is mentioned among the believers in Rome, to whom Saint Paul sent greetings in Romans 16:14. The 4th century church historian Eusebius notes that some people disputed this attribution of authorship. Nevertheless, he writes, "By others it is considered quite indispensable, especially to those who need instruction in the elements of the faith. Hence, as we know, it has been publicly read in churches, and I have found that some of the most ancient writers used it." (Ecclesiastical History, 3.3) This is seen, for example, by the inclusion of "The Shepherd" in the Codex Sinaiticus manuscript of the Bible.
This book gives us valuable insight into the spiritual teaching of the early Christian Church in Rome. Christians continue to find "The Shepherd of Hermas" to be a remarkable work of spiritual insight and edification.
