Inside the collective and communal practice of Sil酹, a group of women creating contemporary textiles from Wich?mythology and local materials
The ancestral power of the act of weaving lies at the core of the work of Claudia Alarc鏮 & Sil酹, a collective of weavers from the Wich?people. Formed in 2023, the group currently comprises more than 100 women who live in the province of Salta in northern Argentina. Under the leadership of Indigenous artist Claudia Alarc鏮 (born 1989), these weavers from the Alto la Sierra and La Puntana Wich?communities developed a technique in which a single piece may be worked on collectively. Different patterns and references, drawn from the Wich?s mythology and geography, thus synthesize into a living document of Indigenous history, traditional crafts and women's roles in the domestic sphere. This bilingual (English/Portuguese) volume accompanies exhibitions of Sil酹's work at the Museu de Arte de S緌 Paulo Assis Chateaubriand and at the Gund at Kenyon College.
