Forty hard conversations, one per situation, with the actual words to say - at work, at family dinners, at the doctor's office, and when it goes badly.
Most books on this subject are warm. This one is useful. It assumes you are an adult with a manager who wants a call tomorrow, a brother bringing your father to dinner on Saturday, an intake form with two boxes and neither is right - and that what you need at eleven at night is not encouragement but a sentence you can say out loud without your voice going.
Each entry is organized the same way, in plain prose: what is actually at stake, what to decide before you open your mouth, the exact words in quotation marks, what may come back at you including the ugly version, and how to get out of the room. Every suggested line has been written against the worst response, not the best one.
It also says the thing most books won't. Some conversations are not worth having. Not telling a grandparent, a manager, a neighbor, or a whole town is a legitimate adult decision, and several entries end by recommending exactly that.
WHAT IS INSIDE
- Six decisions to make before any conversation: your one-sentence version, your off-limits list, and your exit
- At work: telling a manager, correcting a pronoun mid-meeting, updating your name in systems that don't expect it, group chat jokes, interviews, and what to put in writing
- With family: a parent who will take it hard, a parent who will ask forty questions, siblings, grandparents, holidays, introducing a partner, and the old name used at dinner
- In medical rooms: forms that don't fit, intake, the provider who assumes, bringing someone with you, changing provider, and correcting your records
- Old friends and old places: the friend you haven't told in years, reunions, landlords and neighbors, everyday admin and travel, and letting a friendship end without a speech
- When it goes badly: they cry, they argue, they go quiet for months, you handled it badly, and what to do the night after
PERFECT FOR
Adults who want phrasing rather than affirmations. People who don't usually read this kind of book. Anyone who has ever rehearsed a sentence in a parking lot and then said something else entirely.
No legal advice, no medical advice, no promises about how it will go - just the words, and what to do when they don't land.
