The Fall of Constantinople: 1453 and the Scholars Who Carried Rome's Library West

The Roman Empire ended on a Tuesday morning in May 1453. Almost nobody counts it.

Most readers learn that Rome fell in 476. The people living in Constantinople would have found that claim bewildering. They called themselves Romans. Their emperor stood in an unbroken line, their courts ran on Roman law, and their capital was the city Constantine himself had founded. When the walls finally came down under Ottoman cannon, the thing that ended was not a Greek kingdom with a Roman nickname. It was the Roman state - eleven hundred years after everyone stopped paying attention to it.

The siege is one of the great set pieces in military history, and it was a genuinely close-run thing. Constantine XI held fourteen miles of wall with perhaps seven thousand men. Mehmed II, a sultan of twenty-one whom everyone underestimated, brought as many as eighty thousand - and the largest cannon ever built, cast by a Hungarian engineer who had offered the gun to the defenders first and been told they could not afford it. For fifty-three days the Theodosian Walls, which had turned back every attacker for a thousand years, very nearly held again. Then Mehmed dragged his warships over a hill.

But this is also a book about the cargo. For fifty years before the fall and for decades after, Greek scholars carried manuscripts west - teaching Greek to Italians who had not been able to read it for seven centuries, and putting Plato, Ptolemy, Archimedes and Homer back into the hands of the Latin West. They did not know they were seeding the Renaissance. The city fell. The library got out.
