This book explores the history, craft and continuing relevance of scientific glassblowing, showing how handmade glass apparatus has shaped modern science. It brings together historical essays, practical reflections and personal accounts that reveal the hidden work behind laboratory glassware, from early scientific discoveries and lead glass to Pyrex, fused silica, custom apparatus and today's research workshops.
Throughout the volume, scientific glassblowing is shown as practical problem-solving. Glassblowers turn researchers' ideas into working apparatus, make delicate components stronger or easier to repair, and adapt their craft to the needs of chemistry, physics and other laboratory fields. The book also traces the workshops, suppliers and trade networks that helped scientific glassware develop, including the British Pyrex project.
At the same time, this volume celebrates the people and skills behind the craft. It considers the beauty of scientific glassware, the relationship between artistic and scientific glassblowing, and the importance of training, public demonstrations and inclusive masterclasses for keeping the profession alive. Rich in historical detail and practical insight, the book will interest scientific glassblowers, laboratory technicians, chemists, historians of science and technology, glass artists, and anyone curious about the handmade instruments that continue to support experimental science.
