商品簡介
We were promised moon bases and flying cars. We got a supercomputer in our pocket and a house we can't afford.
The future did not fail to arrive. It arrived wearing the wrong face.
Tom Rodgers grew up in the America that believed the future was a scheduled event. Every World's Fair pavilion, every Apollo launch, every episode of Star Trek carried the same promise: each generation would go further than the last. Sixty years later, the miracles were delivered - and the promise underneath them was not.
Who Stole My Future? is a mystery, and the missing thing is the world we were told to expect. The trail runs from the Levittown kitchen to the Powell Memo, from the polio vaccine to the gig economy, from a boy watching the Moon landing on a console television to the moment the paychecks stopped following the productivity. What it uncovers is not a story of progress denied but of progress quietly turned to other ends.
This is not a book about nostalgia. It is a book about possibility. Because the shape of the future was never inevitable. It was chosen - and what was chosen can be chosen again.
For readers of Evil Geniuses, The Rise and Fall of American Growth, and Deaths of Despair.
