Stifel is mostly forgotten today, but for over forty years, he stood as one of the leading figures in St. Louis. He was a brewer by trade, but he was even more well known for his political influence and for being an avid sportsman. In fact, Otto was involved in three of the most significant sports moments in United States history. First, he won the biggest American horserace ever at the time with his prized filly Colonial Girl. Next, he became instrumental in the formation of a third major league for baseball that forever changed the game. And finally, a brief conversation he had about the 1919 World Series altered the course and the discovery of the infamous Black Sox scandal--and not in a way one might expect.
This detailed biography describes many obstacles Stiefel faced, including a governor's holy crusade against his beloved horseracing industry and strong anti-German sentiment during World War I. As a brewer, Stifel was also severely impacted by Prohibition. Even then, however, he had seemingly found a way to weather the storm and had convincingly won the Republican primary for a Congressional seat in 1920. His sudden and unexpected death that followed was shocking and left many questioning why it had occurred at all.
