商品簡介

Jonathan Carroll was barely fifteen when his father died. What stayed with him was not only the loss but the words other people offered for it: theological, kindly meant, and somehow never quite the shape of what he was carrying. That gap has followed him through twenty years as a parish minister and more than a decade as a psychotherapist and philosophical practitioner, present as more than a hundred people took their last breath.

What the End Asks of Us is his attempt to close that gap. A companion, he writes, comes from the Latin com panis: one who shares bread with another, not a guide who walks ahead and beckons you forward, but someone who walks alongside. That is the whole aim of the book: to be with the reader, wherever they stand among the three conditions at its center, dying, grieving, and giving care, drawing on Stoicism, Existentialism, Phenomenology, and the Buddhist and Taoist traditions to sit honestly with what each one actually asks of a person.

Carroll wrote it, in the end, for everyone, because there is no getting around any of the three. Grief comes for all of us, if not yet then eventually. Nearly all of us will, at some point, be asked to care for someone else through illness, dying, or loss. And every one of us, without exception, is going to die. This is not a book for a special population. It is a book for the condition of being human.

It is written for everyone, although readers who come to these questions without religious faith, wounded by religion, or, in Carroll's phrase, somewhere in "the complicated middle" will hopefully find it particularly helpful. It makes no promise of stages, timelines, or closure arriving on schedule. What it offers instead is company: honest, unhurried, and willing to sit inside the hardest questions a life can raise.

As Carroll puts it: "This is what the end asks of us. It is, it turns out, everything."

Give it to someone who is grieving. Give it to someone who is caring for a parent, a spouse, a sibling, a child, or a friend. Give it to someone who is dying. Or keep it for yourself, because sooner or later, in one role or another, that is all of us.
