Six men had reasons to hate Sandy Campbell. Five are telling the truth. One is not. When the quarrelsome artist is found dead beside a stream near the Scottish town of Kirkcudbright, suspicion falls upon the painters who knew him best. Campbell had a talent for provoking people, and nearly everyone in his circle had reason to resent him. The problem is not finding a suspect. It is determining which of several apparently convincing alibis is false.
Lord Peter Wimsey must reconstruct the movements of six men through a maze of railway timetables, bicycles, roads, missing time, and contradictory testimony. Every answer seems to create another problem, and the truth depends upon identifying the single deception hidden among five persuasive stories.
Set against the villages, streams, railway lines, and artists' communities of southwestern Scotland, Five Red Herrings is one of Dorothy L. Sayers's most intricate detective puzzles. Packed with false leads, shifting suspicions, and carefully constructed alibis, it challenges both Wimsey and the reader to discover which clue matters-and which five are designed to send the investigation in the wrong direction.
