Originally published in 1981, the ten essays in this collection were originally delivered as public Lecturae Dantis in the University of Cambridge. As far as possible the contributors have preserved the form of the original lectures, which combined elements of the running commentary and the critical essay. Each reading is devoted to a single canto of the Comedy, and the text of that canto has been broken down into manageable units. Raphael was the preeminent painter of Renaissance Rome, whose classical style marks some of the most enduring masterpieces of Italian Renaissance art. Of these, the Stanza della Segnatura in the Vatican Palace has often been considered the most aesthetically perfect. Executed between 1508 and 1511 for the notoriously temperamental, but adventurous, patron of the arts, Pope Julius II, it was the commission that propelled Raphael, then a young man, into international prominence. The work consists of a chamber with a painted ceiling, a pavement of inlaid marble, and four frescoed walls, all orchestrated with a cast of famous historical figures who exemplify the various disciplines of learning. Joost-Gaugier's study is the first to examine the elements of the Stanza della Segnatura as an ensemble. This book examines government ethics rules and their enforcement in China, as well as in three other jurisdictions for comparative insights. Empirical research methods (involving primarily semi-structured interviews) have been employed to explore the dynamics of actual enforcement policies and practices in China. This book forms an analytical framework through reviewing existing theories on government ethics regulation and general regulation literature and analyzing government ethics rules in the US, the UK, and Hong Kong. Using this framework, it seeks to explore the patterns and features of government ethics rules and their enforcement in China. It shows that the inadequacy of government ethics rules per se and the deterrence-oriented criminal enforcement style of government ethics regulation are important but ignored elements of the problem of rampant corruption in China.
