Invariant theory is a subject within abstract algebra that studies polynomial functions which do not change under transformations from a linear group. John Hilton Grace (1873–1958) was a research mathematician specialising in algebra and geometry. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1908. His co-author Dr Alfred Young (1873–1940) was also a research mathematician before being ordained in 1908; in 1934 he too was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society. Abstract algebra was one of the new fields of study within mathematics which developed out of geometry during the nineteenth century. It became a major area of research in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. First published in 1903, this book introduced the work on invariant theory of the German mathematicians Alfred Clebsch and Paul Gordan into British mathematics. It was considered the standard work on the subject.

Written in the wake of the advent of Relativity by an author who made important contributions to projective and differential geometry, and topology, this early Cambridge Tract in Mathematics and Theoretical Physics aimed to assist students of the time from the fields of differential geometry and mathematical physics. Beginning by introducing formal preliminaries, the text continues, bringing the underlying differential invariant theory that to this day remains relevant in a range of geometrical and physical applications, to the fore.

In the summer semester of 1897 David Hilbert (1862–1943) gave an introductory course in Invariant Theory at the University of Gottingen. This book is an English translation of the handwritten notes taken from this course by Hilbert's student Sophus Marxen. The year 1897 was the perfect time for Hilbert to present an introduction to invariant theory as his research in the subject had been completed. His famous finiteness theorem had been proved and published in two papers that changed the course of invariant theory dramatically and that laid the foundation for modern commutative algebra. Thus these lectures take into account both the old approach of his predecessors and his newer ideas. This bridge from nineteenth- to twentieth-century mathematics makes these lecture notes a special and fascinating account of invariant theory. Hilbert's course was given at a level accessible to graduate students in mathematics, requiring only a familiarity with linear algebra and the basics of ring and
