高科技產品大多是利用固體(固態)的功能性材料來製作，因此要了解科技產品的原理，就必須先了解固體材料的物理特性，討論固體材料物理特性的科學稱為「固態物理學(Solid state physics)」。本章先從原子的發光原理談起，再介紹原子的發光顏色、半導體的發光原理、半導體的發光顏色、半導體的發光效率，最後介紹固體材料的導電特性。光通訊元件的工作原理與基本的光學物理效應息息相關，因此要了解各種光學元件就必須先了解光波在固體材料內的特性。本章先從光的折射率(Index)談起，再介紹光的模態(Mode)、色散(Dispersion)、積體光學(Integrated optics)、光電磁聲效應，最後介紹光通訊元件的分類。光通訊的主動元件是光通訊系統裡比較複雜的元件，通常困難度高價格也高，光通訊比電通訊價格更高的原因之一就是主動元件。本章先從雷射(Laser)的原理談起，再介紹雷射光的特性、雷射的種類、雷射二極體(LD)、光通訊用雷射二極體、光放大器(Optical Amplifier)、光偵測器(PD)，最後介紹光調變器(Optical modulator)。光通訊的被動元件是光通訊系統裡比較簡單的元件，雖然沒有主動元件複雜，但是重要性很高。本章先從光纖與光連接器的原理談起，再介紹光耦合器與光分離器、光隔絕器與光衰減器、光交換器、波長多工器(WDM)，最後介紹光子晶體(Photonic crystal)與最近熱門的超光學(Meta optics)。人工智慧伺服器需要結合大量圖形處理器(GPU)形成運算「叢集(Cluster)」，當運算速度愈來愈快，傳送的資料愈來愈多，使用光訊號傳輸就成為趨勢。本章先從光收發模組的原理談起，再介紹矽光子(SiPh)元件、矽光子的世代演進，最後介紹共同封裝光學(CPO)與資料中心的發展趨勢。
