In Painting Architecture: Jiehua in Yuan China, 1271–1368, Leqi Yu has conducted comprehensive research on jiehua or ruled-line painting, a unique painting genre in fourteenth-century China. This genre relies on tools such as rulers to represent architectural details and structures accurately. Such technical consideration and mechanical perfection linked this painting category with the builder’s art, which led to Chinese elites’ belittlement and won Mongol patrons’ admiration. Yu suggests that painters in the Yuan dynasty made new efforts towards a unique modular system and an unsurpassable plain-drawing tradition. She argues that these two strategies made architectural paintings in the Yuan dynasty entirely different from their predecessors, as well as making the art form extremely difficult for subsequent painters to imitate.

The final product is viewed in reverse from the opposite side of the glass, which must also be considered when creating the paintings. We have carefully selected a collection of 20 exquisite paintings and calligraphy by Prof. Jao Tsung-i, accompanied by 50 cherished photographs captured during his worldwide travels. These features Prof Jao’s interpretations of landscapes from different corners of the world, including his large-scale paintings depiction well-know sites in Hong Kong, China, and overseas. We can observe how he exceptionally reflected the distinct character of each place and represented it using the traditional Chinese medium of ink and brush as well as Western painting style. As the old saying goes, “It is better to travel ten thousand miles than to read ten thousand books”. While achieving one of these is already incredibly challenging, Prof. Jao not only traversed thousands of miles, surpassing the accomplishments of both ancient masters and numerous contemporary painters.

This book, the first of its kind in Hong Kong, offers insights from experts in healthcare and higher education both locally and further afield. Shao Xunmei, poet, essayist, publisher, and printer, played a signifcant role in the publication and dissemination of journals and pictorial magazines in Shanghai during the 1920s and 1930s, but this is the first collection of his prose writings to be published in English. The introduction of elections to district advisory bodies during the early 1980s was expected to improve the public delivery of services. However, as time passed, electoral politics led to party politics, elite fragmentation and political struggles. Politicization and hyper-politicization in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region has brought about a fluctuating pattern between administrative recentralization, the Tsang administration’s attempts at decentralization, and the post-2019 administrative recentralization.The purpose of this book is to study the intertwining relationship between district administration and electoral politics.
