The results of their researches were published in successive editions of The Knossos Tablets: A Transliteration. This 1971 fourth edition completely replaced the third of 1964. It contains the texts of many fragments previously discarded as unreadable, and several hundred improved texts resulting from joins between fragments. In addition, the original of every tablet has been closely scrutinised and numerous improvements in the readings have been made. The system of classification has been modified, and many more tablets are now assigned to series, and for the first time there was an attempt to reconstruct the original filing system of the archive. The scribal hand is noted where it can be identified. The book is indispensable for all scholars who wish to work directly on this material.

Originally delivered in November 1915 as a series of lectures at the University of Cambridge, this close textual analysis of Shakespeare overturned the conventional methods of Shakespearean bibliography. In this careful study, Pollard, a bibliographer and literary scholar, called into question the long-held assumption that the early Quartos were of little bibliographical value because of the errors, mis-spellings and mis-lineations. By emphasizing the efforts made to impede printing piracy in early modern England, Pollard argued that the Quartos are much closer to Shakespeare's manuscripts than previous scholarship had allowed. Critics have traditionally found fault with the descriptions and images in John Milton's poetry and thought of him as an author who wrote for the ear more than the eye. In Milton's Visual Imagination, Stephen B. Dobranski proposes that, on the contrary, Milton enriches his biblical source text with acute and sometimes astonishing visual details. He contends that Milton's imagery - traditionally disparaged by critics - advances the epic's narrative while expressing the author's heterodox beliefs. In particular, Milton exploits the meaning of objects and gestures to overcome the inherent difficulty of his subject and to accommodate seventeenth-century readers. Bringing together Milton's material philosophy with an analysis of both his poetic tradition and cultural circumstances, this book is a major contribution to our understanding of early modern visual culture as well as of Milton's epic.
