Computing and Language Variation

Frederick Apthorp Paley (1815–1888) published Volume 3 of his English commentary on Euripides in 1860. It contains the Greek text of Euripides' plays Hercules Furens, Phoenissae, Orestes, Iphigenia in Tauris, Iphigenia in Aulide, and Cyclops, each with an introductory essay. Paley's detailed commentary is given at the foot of each page of Greek text. It discusses Euripides' language and style, explaining difficult grammatical structures, syntax and vocabulary; poetic form and Euripides' innovative approach to composing tragedy; textual variation between manuscripts; the historical and literary context of each play; and their reception history. Henri Coudreau (1859–1899) was one of the greatest explorers of the nineteenth century. This 1892 book, containing vocabulary lists for four Amazonian indigenous languages, derives from his three expeditions to French Guyana described in La France Equinoxale (1887, also reissued in this series) and Chez nos Indiens (1892). Three of the languages belong to the Carib family, while the fourth, Emerillon is a Guarani-Tupi language. Coudreau's word lists, each organised by topics and grammatical categories, and subdivided partly alphabetically and partly by semantic field, represented a huge advance on previous publications on these languages, both in terms of quantity and in terms of syntactic data (examples of different persons and tenses). Dialect variation is also recorded in the case of Ouayana (Wayana) and Oyampi, which Coudreau encountered in two different areas. Coudreau's record remains a valuable resource for scholars of Native American languages and their history.

It combines techniques from corpus linguistics with critical discourse studies to analyse a large corpus of newspaper articles (36 million words) representing ten years of obesity coverage. These articles are studied from a range of methodological perspectives, and analytical themes include variation between newspapers, change over time, diet and exercise, gender and social class. The volume also investigates the language that readers use when responding to obesity representations in the context of online comments. Evolutionary Phonology is a theory of sound patterns which synthesizes results in historical linguistics, phonetics and phonological theory.
