Previous collections of photographs illustrating the lost world of Old Hong Kong have tended to focus exclusively on black-and-white images from before the Second World War. In this new collection of photographs from the period 1948-1969, Otto Lam has instead selected a dazzling array of images in glorious full colour, most of them taken by overseas visitors to Hong Kong, including some of the earliest surviving colour views of the city and its environs. These evocative images demonstrate what a vibrant place Hong Kong was during this crucial period in the colony's rapid economic growth and modernisation. This publication accompanies an unprecedented exhibition highlighting four of the magnificent chinoiserie tapestries of Chinese Emperor Qianlong, woven after designs by François Boucher at the famous Beauvais manufactory from 1758–1760. The large and well-preserved textiles form part of the royal French commission by King Louis XV, objects of which were presented to Qianlong in 1766. These celebrated tapestries are joined by another historic set of culturally related depictions in print—The Battles of the Emperor of China. The engravings were ordered by Qianlong, drawn by Jesuit painters at the Imperial Court in Beijing and then printed in Paris 1769–1774. The ‘culture’ of these prints follows King Louis XIV’s influential images of the Histoire du Roi and presents Qianlong as both a war hero and as the undisputed leader of China in the mid-eighteenth century. Tracing its origins back to 1822 in Whampoa, the Mariners’ Club in Hong Kong was established to meet a specific need for an Anglo-Chinese society defined by that most dubious of activities, seafaring. Its creation was anything but straightforward, and in this can be seen the mutable and often tortuous relations between the various religious bodies, the local population, the transient sailors, the emerging captains of industry, and the growing regulatory reach of the colonial government. The club evolved through many embodiments and witnessed the growth of Hong Kong from a collection of mat-sheds on the foreshore, through colony to its current status. Throughout its turbulent past it has been occasionally marginalized but has always served as an important base for the key actors in the main commercial activity in Hong Kong: seafarers. This study tests the factors of transaction costs (TC) and resource-based views (RBV) to explain the MNEs’ entry decisions in China. By using large firm-level data from China, I show in this paper that variables related to internal uncertainty (e.g., management) and firm-specific assets tend to affect MNEs’ entry decisions in a way that is consistent with the transaction cost logic; that is, the higher degree of internal uncertainty, the MNEs may require more control over the foreign facilities or the JV. On the other hand, those variables related to external uncertainty (e.g., marketing) and intangible assets tend to conform to the resource-based view, which means higher external uncertainty would cause the MNEs to leverage the resources or local experience of local partners. This suggests that MNEs may need complementary resources from local partners to reduce the external uncertainty and enhance the value of their intangible resources.

This study attempts to analyze systematically the rationale, evolution, and consequences of Chiang Kai-shek's "unity before resistance" doctrine, which was the basis of Nanking's appeasement policy. The author argues that there were a number of independent variables that influenced Nanking's attitude toward Japan: 1) the internal disintegration of China; 2) factional conflicts within the Kuomintang; 3) ineffective administration; 4) the vicissitudes of nationalism; 5) the material backwardness of China; and 6) international mediation. All of these factors were interrelated. The intervening variables were Chiang Kai-shek's personality, his patterns of political behavior, his way of ruling, and his perception of internal and external crises. By adopting the temporary appeasement policy toward Japan, Chiang hoped to gain enough time to consolidate China and his supreme leadership. Multiple Modernities approaches the concept of modernity through two historical phases of Norawy. The first study focuses on the interplay between Lutheran state officials and popular movements in the nineteenth century as an essential aspect of the growth of social democracy. The second examination of modernization centers on twentieth-century Norway after World War II. The period of the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms (907-960) has long been treated as an anomaly in the history of China, an age of great disunity between the empires of the Tang and the Song dynasties. Breaking with previous scholarship on China's middle period, this edited volume presents individual studies that focus on the art, culture, and politics of the interregnum, challenging underlying assumptions about the unitary nature of dynastic culture and its value as a category of historical analysis. The papers in this publication are studies on the Chinese communicity in Malaysia in relation to developments in Southeast Asia. The formation of Chinese communities in the region were established by waves of migration into the region over periods of time. However, given the proximity to China, there has been and there will always be the reminder of an exogenous influence, the China factor, on the Chinese communities in the region. In fact the Xinhua News Agency from the People's Republic of China reported recently, with pride, that there are now an estimated forty five million Overseas Chinese all over the world. Studies as presented by the authors indicate the diversity of the Chinese community in Malaysia. Often the community is mistakenly perceived as a monolithic entity. The truth could not be more different. The community comprise minority groups such as Chinese Muslims, Chinese Christians and Peranakans, besides the common perception of only Buddhists and Taoists. Contemporary Chinese art is nowadays a subject area widely taught and researched in academic and non-academic publications, but it has not yet been studied by 'localizing' the research in specific cultural areas within the Chinese world. Selecting Hong Kong for a first such study was an obvious choice, since Hong Kong culture has had for already quite a long time very specific features which have put it apart from the generally accepted definition of Chinese national culture. Although it is not a survey of 'Hong Kong art,' as such a study would demand many more books, the works of about eighty artists working in Hong Kong (and sometimes outside) have been analyzed and contextualized in these pages.

即時定量聚合酶連鎖反應 (real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction, real-time qPCR) 為具高特異性且可快速、大量定量的分析方法，為目前退伍軍人菌檢測主要之發展方向。冷卻 水塔為退伍軍人菌重要滋生源，但水塔中累積許多有機物與鐵銹，這些均可能抑制real-time qPCR反應，若未能去除抑制物干擾，則可能低估real-time qPCR檢測結果。本研究比較QiAamp DNA mini kit (Q) 與freeze-thaw/phenol-chloroform (FT-PC) 兩種DNA萃取方法，以及此兩種方法加上膠體管柱 (Sepharose 4B gel column, G) 純化對PCR抑制物的移除、分離的DNA純度及DNA產量之影響；另亦評估Q、Q/G、FT-PC及FT-PC/G結合稀釋作用後所得real-time qPCR抑制情形以及其相對應之L. pneumophila濃度。結果發現：(i) 對腐植酸與鐵離子共存樣本，以Q及FT-PC均可去除≦100 μg/mL腐植酸至低於偵測下限 (1 μg/mL)；(ii) 而不論鐵離子單獨或與腐植酸共存的樣本，Q均可得獲得最高DNA產量 (2.53~3.36; 6.58~6.79 μg/mL)，其次為FT-PC (2.00~2.37; 3.90~4.33 μg/mL)，Q/G (1.15~1.27; 3.21~3.33 μg/mL) 及FT-PC/G (0.76~0.80; 1.77~1.85 μg/mL)；(iii) 四種方法均可獲得純度佳的DNA (A260/A280=1.5-2.0)；(iv) 以G純化DNA無法進一步改善PCR抑制情形，而稀釋作用則可有效去除以Q、Q/G以及FT-PC/G所得DNA之PCR抑制情形。及 (v) 比較四種處理方法結合不同稀釋倍數於real-time qPCR檢測L. pneumophila濃度之結果發現：只含鐵離子的樣本以Q萃取加上10倍或100倍的稀釋可得最接近起使添加之細菌濃度值；而鐵離子與腐植酸共存之樣本，最佳之處理程序則為Q或Q/G分離DNA再加上10倍或100倍的稀釋。由於Q/G程序較複雜且會造成部分DNA損失，因此本研究建議以Q萃取法加上10倍或100倍稀釋為以real-time qPCR檢測含
