The work of the Marquis de Laplace (1749–1827) was enormously influential on the development of mathematical physics, astronomy and statistics. His Exposition du système du monde (first published in 1796) is often regarded as the most important book on mechanics after Newton's Principia Mathematica, and the elegance and clarity of its style won Laplace a seat in the Académie Française. The book, which was translated into English in 1809, was intended to 'offer a complete solution of the great mechanical problem presented by the solar system'. It was in this work that Laplace offered his nebular hypothesis, which proposed that the solar system originated from the contraction and cooling of a cloud of incandescent gas. Thomas Stamford Raffles (1781–1826) was a British civil servant and statesman, best known for his founding of the city (now Republic) of Singapore. After the capture of Java by the British in 1811, Raffles was appointed Lieutenant Governor of the island, a position he held until 1815. After a two-year interlude in England, he sailed back to the East, and established the city of Singapore in 1819. This book provides a detailed narrative of the Kat River Settlement in the Eastern Cape of South Africa during the nineteenth century. The settlement was created by the British to use the Khoekhoe as a living barrier between the Cape Colony and the amaXhosa. It was fought over with some regularity, however, and finally broken up after some of the Khoekhoe joined the amaXhosa in their war against the colony. Nevertheless, in the time that the settlement existed, the Khoekhoe both created a fertile landscape in the valley and developed a political theology of great importance for the evolution of South Africa. They were also the subjects of - and participants in - the major debates leading to the introduction of a liberal constitution for the Cape in 1853. The history of the settlement is thus crucial in understanding the development of both colonial racism and the creation of the colony's non-racial democracy.

The author of pioneering works on the plant families Euphorbiaceae and Malpighiaceae, French botanist Adrien de Jussieu (1797–1853), from a famous family of scientists, became professor of botany at the Paris Museum National d'Histoire Naturelle in 1826. The author of several specialised monographs, he is best known for his Botanique: Cours élémentaire d'histoire naturelle (1842), an exhaustive introduction to botany originally intended for use in French schools.
