The Humor Code

The haunting testimony of Holocaust survivor Emmie Arbel: arrested, deported, and imprisoned at the age of five, and of the inspirational life she built in its aftermath Arrested with her family in her native Holland, deported, held in a series of Nazi concentration camps, and orphaned--all by the age of seven--Emmie Arbel transformed her childhood survival into a lifelong mission to stand against any such other horrors. With her home now in Israel, to where she and her brother emigrated with their foster parents in the wake of the Holocaust, she still frequently travels abroad to report and record her testimony. Working closely with Arbel herself, the acclaimed German graphic artist Barbara Yelin has created a brilliant portrait--what she calls a "visual biography"--of this remarkable woman: her rebellious spirit, her resilient humor, the seriousness of her contemplation. "Surviving is not over," she reflects. "Surviving is every day." Emmie Arbel: The Colour of Memory is at once a ha

Jarvis revisits his beloved, sometimes befuddled, duo in a fifth set of stories where gentle mix-ups and genuine friendship abound.Bear and Bird may not always understand each other, but they both want nothing more than for their best friend to be happy. So when they each find today’s date circled in red, they obviously assume it’s the other one’s birthday (so sorry, Snail!). And when Bird puts her pal through his paces—to prove he’s himself and not his look-alike cousin—she finds a sweet way to soothe an unhappy Bear when the test is done. Whether it’s Bird bravely helping Bear to retrieve a ball from a cave full of stinky goo (or so they’ve heard) or both of them putting their faith in a flying umbrella when Bird blithely removes the candy trail meant to lead them home, Jarvis’s subtle humor and sweet illustrations create a charming world that young readers are eager to come back to.

Is there ever such a thing as being too considerate? It's another comedy of errors in this fourth set of stories featuring Jarvis's lovable duo."Bird, why are you blowing in my face?" said Bear."I'm just stretching my cheeks," said Bird. "Important to stretch your cheeks."Bear and Bird are the kind of friends who just want to make each other happy. So when Bird realizes Bear has had a leaf stuck to his face all day, she goes to comical extremes not to embarrass him--even if it means encouraging a new trend. And when they both grab the same excellent stick on a windy day, they outdo each other trying to give it back--until Bear comes up with a better use for their imagination. Whether following a hilariously--and touchingly--circular path on Swapsy Day or discovering there are as many times of day as there are things to do, Jarvis's classic pair fuses humor and heart in another quartet of adventures.

Now an original Netflix series! From the author of The Wicked Heart and The Immortal comes a beautiful and haunting novel about a group of five terminally ill teenagers whose midnight stories become their reality. Rotterham Home was a hospice for young people--a place where teenagers with terminal illnesses went to die. Nobody who checked in ever checked out. It was a place of pain and sorrow, but also, remarkably, a place of humor and adventure. Every night at twelve, a group of young guys and girls at the hospice came together to tell stories. They called themselves the Midnight Club, and their stories could be true or false, inspiring or depressing, or somewhere in-between. One night, in the middle of a particularly scary story, the teenagers make a secret pact with each other, which says, "The first one who dies will do whatever he or she can do to contact us from beyond the grave, to give us proof that there is life after death." Then one of them does die...

The Earth is a dynamic system. Internal processes, together with external gravitational forces of the Sun, Moon and planets, displace the Earth's mass, impacting on its shape, rotation and gravitational field. D. E. Smylie provides a rigorous overview of the dynamical behaviour of the solid Earth, explaining the theory and presenting methods for numerical implementation. Topics include advanced digital analysis, earthquake displacement fields, Free Core Nutations observed by the Very Long Baseline Interferometric technique, translational modes of the solid inner core observed by the superconducting gravimeters, and dynamics of the outer fluid core. This book is supported by freeware computer code, available online for students to implement the theory. Online materials also include a suite of graphics generated from the numerical analysis, combined with 100 graphic examples in the book to make this an ideal tool for researchers and graduate students in the fields of geodesy, seismology

Although the trust is generally seen as a creation of the common law tradition, modern civilian systems are increasingly interested in incorporating the trust institution. This collection of essays explores multiple civilian experiences with the trust. The reform of Quebec's trust institution attracted worldwide attention in 1994. Louisiana's 1964 Trust Code stands in an uneasy relationship with its general law of property. Israel has had a fascinating pluralist experience of multiples trusts. The People's Republic of China passed a Trust Law in 2001 and the development of the trust in this important economy is a matter of great interest and some controversy. France adopted a trust in 2007, and in Italy, trusts can be created through the choice of foreign governing law, under the Hague Trusts Convention. The concluding chapter draws conclusions from all the essays and sets out challenges for future research in the comparative law of trusts.

The Camorra criminal trials, held in Naples, involved more than a thousand people charged with belonging to a criminal organisation, the Nuova Camorra Organizzata (NCO). In the winter of 1982–3 the NCO suffered the desertion of some of its key men who, once arrested, broke the code of silence (omertà), turned against their former associates, and collaborated with the Justice Department. In the initial set of trials their testimony was found sufficiently reliable and convincing to determine the convictions of more than 800 defendants, but in the appeal their credibility was destroyed and the majority of people convicted solely on these witnesses' testimony were acquitted. This study documents the shifting relationship between these witnesses - called pentiti - and the Justice Department. To investigate this dramatic reversal of the defendants' convictions Marco Jacquemet combines analysis of talk and power technologies with a reflection on truth and credibility as communicative represen

This is a classic account of the origins of freemasonry, a brotherhood of men bound together by secret initiatives, secret rituals and secret modes of identification with ideals of fraternity, equality, toleration and reason. Beginning in Britain, freemasonry swept across Europe in the mid-eighteenth century in astonishing fashion yet its origins are still hotly debated today. The prevailing assumption has been that it emerged in England around 1700, but David Stevenson demonstrates that the real origins of modern freemasonry lie in Scotland around 1600, when the system of lodges was created by stonemasons with rituals and secrets blending medieval mythology with Renaissance and seventeenth-century history. This fascinating work of historical detection will be essential reading for anyone interested in Renaissance and seventeenth-century history, for freemasons themselves, and for those readers captivated by the secret societies at the heart of the bestselling Da Vinci Code.

As a pediatrician, Katrina Ubell, MD, always struggled with her weight--she was either 40 pounds overweight, or struggling to lose that weight. Although she'd regularly counsel parents on the importance of keeping their kids healthy and fostering good eating habits, Dr. Ubell, as a busy professional, was never able to do the same for herself. Like everyone else, she tried many different diets and programs, but would always regain the weight. In 2015, Dr. Ubell "cracked the code" for making weight loss permanent, and developed a program targeted at busy physicians like herself who often de-prioritize their own wellness. As a weight loss coach, Dr. Ubell has helped over 1,000 busy physicians and professionals find and stay at a healthy weight with her brain-based program, and is now ready to bring this program to the general public. Dr. Ubell's program doesn't involve any unrealistic diets, plans, special foods, supplements, or even rigorous exercise protocols; instead, she uses a deep u
