我在1942 年出生於台灣台南縣新營鎮。沒上過所謂的幼稚園，我的小學、初中、高中在新營鎮及台南市兩地方度過。大學在台灣大學醫學院醫科就讀，畢業後的成長、進修及服務地方擴及太平洋東、西兩岸的台灣、美國、加拿大三個地方。我自己定位為醫學教育家(medical educator)，與文學、歷史的愛好者，及政治、社會的關心者。做為知識份子的要素，就是講真話，明是非。我終身奉為處世的準則，就是哈佛大學早期的校訓名言「VERITAS（拉丁文）」。我整理及寫作這本我的生命歷程，費時約達七年(2013-2019)之久，這期間剛讀到「黃伯超先生傳」（前衛出版社，2012.05）及「李遠哲傳」（圓神出版社，2016.11），前者（1926出生）是我敬仰的老師、台大醫學院院長、著名醫學教育家及生化學者，後者（1936出生）更是世界級自然科學研究的佼佼者，他在1986年榮獲諾貝爾化學獎，李教授更是一位令人尊敬的教育家，他每到一個大學，總是抱著「點亮每位學生」的心情，去從事研究與教學的工作。他們兩位寫作的章節及涵蓋的內容，影響本書頗大。我書中的「附錄」寫法的靈感及內容，很多是得自於黃伯超教授的大事年表。本書很多章節穿插描述在我生活年代，台灣的社會、政治變動及大學校園學生運動，李遠哲教授在他的傳記中，也帶進相當多的當年他在美國進修、服務期間的美國許多大學校園學運，特別是「反（越）戰」等議題，李遠哲教授的寫法也鼓舞了我，摻入這些社會與政治變遷、民主改革，及一些大家關心的學運等議題。特別是在李登輝總統主政期間，他完成了「寧靜革命」，將以前蔣介石黨國不分、威權獨裁的專制體制，轉變為民主法治的政府，功在台灣。這些活生生的史料與當年台灣社會、政治背景，豐富我這本平凡的生平記事。我這本生平記事主要是要獻給我太太簡靜香教授、家中孩子、後代家人、好朋友，及在我生命期間有緣認識相處的一些人參閱；另外一個大目的是，過去一些時候對於本人有不瞭解的少數人，做一個坦白誠實的解釋與告白。知識份子的責任就是求真理、辨是非，知無不言，縱使所言有令人不悅之處，也在所難免。撰寫自己生平回憶的目的無它，主要是謹供相關人士及有興趣者參考，並期待將它當作一本史料來看待就好。美國前總統雷根 (Ronald Reagan) 曾經說過一句充滿哲理的話：“I now begin the journey that will lead me in
