The main purpose of this book is to develop a general theoretical framework within which it is possible to analyse the interaction of markets in disequilibrium. It considers optimal firm and household behaviour in a dynamic sequence of the labour and commodity markets when there is imperfect information about wage offers and the supply price of labour. The study is mainly theoretical but several empirical phenomena are shown to have an important interpretation within the framework of the model. Models of individual behaviour dealt with in the book increase our understanding of the working of an economic system out of equilibrium by providing the foundation for such dynamic processes as the Keynesian multiplier and the Phillips curve. Gift exchange plays a crucial role in the social and political organization of Mendi in Papua New Guinea. This study examines the role of written agreements in eleventh- and twelfth-century Catalonia, and how they determined the social and political order. By tracing the fate of these agreements - or convenientiae - from their first appearance to the late twelfth century, it is possible to demonstrate the remarkable stability of the fluid structures which they engendered in what is generally thought of as 'feudal society'. The process of documentary change reveals the true nature and pace of the 'transformation of the year 1000'. It does so by focusing on two countries where performance and support do not match. Chile is the economic envy of every country in Latin America, yet support has been surprisingly anemic. By contrast, Venezuela managed to maintain extremely high levels of support during the reign of Hugo Chávez despite severe failures of governance. Resolution of these paradoxes requires turning away from policy decisions and focusing instead on how those decisions are made. Taking inspiration from democratic theory and social psychology, this book argues that extensive opportunities for direct participation in the political process engenders in citizens strong feelings of efficacy - a sense of control over the course of politics.
