A History of the Middle East:From Antiquity to the Present Day

Georges Corm's work on the contemporary Middle East and the relationship between Europe and the East is now essential reading. In order to paint a true picture of this incredibly complex part of the world, situated at the crossroads of three continents, the author examines the "geographical foundations" on which the Anatolian, Iranian, Meso-potamian and Egyptian empires were built. Such an approach avoids confusion between people with separate languages but who have remained in constant interaction: Iranians, Turks and Arabs, all now part of the "Islamic world".

Georges Corm is a Lebanese economist and a historian. He is a consultant to various international associations and a university professor. He is the author of a number of books in French on the issues of development and the contemporary history of the Arab world and its relations with Europe. In English, he has published Fragmentation of the Middle East. The last 30 years, Hutchinson, 1988, and is co-author of Debt and Development, Praeger, New York, 1982.
