Economic and Environmental Sustainability of the Asian Region

Asia has emerged as the growth pole of the global economy; as such, the sustainability of its economic development process is crucial for the well-being of its people and is thus in the greater interests of the world. Harmonising environmental concerns with rapid economic development will ensure sustainability of Asian economic progress in the long run.

This volume discusses issues that are central to this sustainability. It is organized along six themes-Issues in Sustainability of Asian Agriculture, Ecological Concerns in Theory and Practice; Core Themes in Economic Development; Resource Management and Policy Alternatives; Discrimination and Socio-economic Equity in Development; and Peasant Distress and Sustainability of Cotton Economy.

Sucha Singh Gill is Professor of Economics and Director, Centre for South-West Asia Study (Pakistan-Afghanistan), Punjabi University, Patialia.

Lakhwinder Singh is Professor of Economics at Punjabi University, Patiala. Prior to this he has been on the teaching faculty of the University of Delhi and National Institute of Public Finance and Policy, New Delhi and National Institute of Pujabi University, Patiala. Prior to this he has been on the teaching faculty of the University of Delhi and National Institute of Public Finance and Policy, New Delhi. He has also been Ford Foundation Post-Doctoral Fellow in Economics at Yale University, USA and Visiting Research Fellow, Seoul National University, South Korea.

Reena Marwah, Secretary-General of the Association of Asia Scholars, is Associate Professor, Jesus and Mary College, University of Delhi. She was awarded the Robert McNamara Fellowship of the World Bank in 1999-2000, and the Asia Fellowship of the Asian Scholarship Foundation in 2002-3. She is the author of Indian Economy, Society and Polity (co-authored; 2010).
