商品簡介
Suitable for early undergraduate or general readers, the publisher's 10-volume encyclopedia has been carefully planned to bring together a great deal of information in a package structured for student research. The planners have taken the very broad concept of sustainability and looked for logical ways to divide and sub-divide relevant material for presentation in alphabetically arranged articles. Volume 9 is one of three devoted to a geographical area and to "assessing sustainability"--providing a snapshot of current issues and activities. The introductory essay acknowledges that the concept of "Afro-Eurasia" is not widely used among the general population, but it's useful when considering interrelated geographical systems. The other two regional volumes focus on China, India, and East and Southeast Asia (v.7), and the Americas and Oceania (v.8). The editors have selected 80 topics to treat in essays ranging in length from a page or so to several pages. A sampling of topics: conflict minerals, microfinance, mining (Africa), energy security (Europe), international conflict resolutions, World Bank, e-waste, and urbanization. About half the entries are devoted to particular cities, countries, or geographical features. Entries are structured with an initial summary, plenty of subheadings, a conclusion or outlook paragraph, and references and cross references. A reader's guide in the front matter lists entries under broad themes: business, economics, and industry; environmental history; cities and the built environment; natural resources; politics, law, and government; and society and social welfare.
